David
A shepherd boy who killed a giant and became king.
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. — 1 Samuel 17:45
Israel wanted a king who looked the part, and God sent a prophet to a shepherd boy nobody bothered to call in from the field. When the Philistine giant taunted the armies of Israel for forty days, David refused the king's armor and went out with a sling. That victory made him famous, and fame made him a target. Saul hunted him through the wilderness for years, and twice David had the chance to kill the king and would not lift his hand. When he finally reigned, he did not reign perfectly. He took another man's wife, arranged that man's death, and then broke wide open before God when the prophet Nathan confronted him. God called him a man after His own heart, not because he never sinned, but because he never stayed away.
