Elijah

Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain except at his word, and for three and a half years there was none. He was fed by ravens at a brook and then by a widow whose barrel of meal never ran out. On Mount Carmel he gathered the nation and let the prophets of Baal cry to their god from morning until evening while he mocked them, then he soaked his own altar with twelve barrels of water and prayed one short prayer, and the fire of the Lord fell and licked up even the water in the trench. It was the high point of his life, and one death threat from Jezebel sent him running a day's journey into the wilderness to sit under a juniper tree and ask God to take his life. God did not scold him. An angel gave him bread and water and let him sleep, twice. Then at Horeb came a wind, an earthquake, and a fire, and God was in none of them, but in a still small voice that asked him what he was doing there.

Why It Matters
