She prayed so hard for a son that the priest thought she was drunk.
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there. — 1 Samuel 1:27-28
Elkanah loved Hannah and gave her a worthy portion, but the Lord had shut up her womb, and her rival Peninnah provoked her over it year after year until she wept and would not eat. On one of those trips to Shiloh she went up to the house of the Lord in bitterness of soul and prayed, and her lips moved but her voice was not heard. Eli the priest watched her and assumed she was drunk. She told him she was a woman of a sorrowful spirit pouring out her soul before the Lord, and he sent her away in peace, and she went and ate and her countenance was no more sad. She had vowed that if God gave her a son she would give him to the Lord all the days of his life. Samuel was born, and when he was weaned she walked him to Shiloh and left him there with Eli, and she said, For this child I prayed. She went home and sang one of the great songs of the Bible, and God gave her five more children after him.
