He hunted Christians for a living until a light on the road knocked him flat.
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. — Acts 9:3-6
Saul held the coats of the men who stoned Stephen, and he was not a bystander. He went house to house hauling believers to prison and got letters from the high priest so he could do it in other cities too. On the road to Damascus a light out of heaven threw him to the ground and a voice said, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me. He got up blind and sat three days without eating until a frightened disciple named Ananias came and laid hands on him. From there he went out across the Roman world, planting churches in city after city, and he was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and jailed for it. He wrote most of his letters from the road or from a cell, and he called himself the chief of sinners to the very end.
