Judges period, Moabite widow
Ruth
A foreign widow who refused to walk away, and ended up in the family line of Jesus.
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. — Ruth 1:16-17
Famine drove an Israelite family into Moab, and grief drove what was left of it back out. Naomi lost her husband and both sons and told her two Moabite daughters-in-law to return to their mothers' houses. Orpah kissed her and left. Ruth clung to her and said the words people still read at weddings, that Naomi's people would be her people and Naomi's God her God. In Bethlehem she went out to glean barley behind the reapers, which was the work of the poor, and she happened into the field of Boaz, a near kinsman. Boaz noticed her, protected her, and when Naomi sent her to him at the threshingfloor, he took up the right of the kinsman-redeemer and married her. A Moabite widow with no standing and no plan became the great-grandmother of King David.
