Sarai left everything familiar to follow her husband to a land God had not yet named, and she was barren the whole way. Year after year the promise of offspring was repeated to Abram, and nothing happened. She finally decided the promise needed help and gave her handmaid Hagar to her husband, and the moment Hagar conceived the household turned to contempt and hard feelings that lasted for decades. Then three visitors came to the tent door in the heat of the day and said Sarah would have a son when they returned in the season of life. She laughed inside herself, because she was old and worn, and God asked whether anything was too hard for the Lord. She was ninety when Isaac was born, and his name means laughter. The woman who laughed in unbelief ended up laughing for joy, and Hebrews lists her among the faithful.
