Solomon
God offered him anything he wanted. He asked for wisdom, and got everything else too.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? — 1 Kings 3:9
Solomon took the throne of a united kingdom his father had fought for, and he was young and knew it. At Gibeon God appeared to him in a dream by night and said, Ask what I shall give thee, and Solomon asked for an understanding heart to discern between good and bad. The answer pleased God so much that riches and honour came with it unasked. His wisdom was famous from the start, from the two women arguing over one living child to the queen of Sheba coming to test him with hard questions and leaving with no more spirit in her. He built the temple over seven years and prayed at its dedication with his hands spread toward heaven. But he loved many strange women, and they turned his heart, and he built high places for their gods on the hill before Jerusalem. He ended his days writing Ecclesiastes, calling all of it vanity and vexation of spirit, and telling readers to fear God and keep his commandments.
Why It Matters
Wisdom is worth asking God for, but it is not the same as staying close to Him. What you keep guarding matters more than what you already know.
