Timothy

Timothy grew up in Lystra with a Greek father and a Jewish mother, and he knew the holy scriptures from a child because his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice taught him. Paul found him on a second journey, and the brethren spoke so well of him that Paul took him along. He was young enough that Paul had to tell a whole congregation to let no man despise his youth. He was not naturally bold, and Paul reminded him that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. He had stomach trouble and frequent infirmities. Paul left him at Ephesus to deal with false teachers and disorder, which is not an easy first assignment, and wrote him two letters calling him his own son in the faith. The last of them was written from a cold cell with Paul expecting to die, asking Timothy to come before winter and bring the cloak and the books.
