What people think it says

The Bible contains a list of the seven deadly sins.

What Scripture actually says

No such list appears in Scripture. The traditional seven were compiled by church writers centuries later. Proverbs does give a list of things the Lord hates, and it is a different list of seven.

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16
Why the confusion

The traditional seven have been catalogued, ranked, illustrated, and made into films, so it is easy to assume there is a chapter somewhere listing them. There is not. The grouping was developed by monastic writers and later refined by Gregory the Great, and while much of it reflects genuine biblical concerns, the list as a set is tradition rather than text. Proverbs does supply a list, and it is worth reading beside the famous one. These six things doth the Lord hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. The overlap is smaller than expected. Solomon's list is heavy with sins of the tongue and sins against neighbors, which are the ones respectable people commit without ever feeling deadly.
