Dig Before It Rains

2 Kings 3:16-17

You said you believed God would do it. But you have not made any room for it.

You have prayed for the opportunity and left the responsibility untouched. You have asked God to open the door and kept your life arranged as if it never will. You say you are trusting Him for what is coming, but nothing about how you spend your mornings, your money or your attention would suggest you actually expect it to arrive. You are asking Him to fill something you have not dug.

In 2 Kings 3, three armies are stranded in the wilderness without water. Seven days into the march there is nothing left to drink. Men and animals are dying of thirst. The king of Israel is in despair, certain God has led them out here to hand them over to their enemies. And in the middle of that, the prophet Elisha delivers the strangest instruction in the passage. Thus saith the LORD, make this valley full of ditches. Then he tells them something even harder to accept. Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain, yet that valley shall be filled with water.

No storm on the horizon. No clouds gathering. Nothing in the sky that would make digging trenches in dry, cracked ground look like anything other than wasted effort. If you had walked up on that camp and watched grown men break ground under a clear sky with no weather in sight, you would have thought they had lost their minds.

They dug anyway.

That is the part of faith nobody wants to talk about. Not the waiting. Not the hoping. The digging. The specific, physical, unglamorous work of making room for something you cannot yet see and have no evidence is coming. Faith that only shows up as a feeling in your chest costs you nothing. Faith that picks up a shovel in dry ground costs you something real. Sweat. Time. The risk of looking foolish to everyone watching you prepare for rain that has not fallen.

Here is what has to be said clearly, because it is easy to hear this story wrong. They did not dig because digging creates water. The ditches did not summon the rain. God did not need trenches in order to be capable of filling a valley. They dug because God told them where the water would be, and their job was to be ready to receive it when it came. The obedience did not produce the miracle. The obedience positioned them for it.

That distinction matters more than anything else in this passage. This is not a formula where preparation forces God's hand. It is not the idea that if you just work hard enough or believe hard enough you can manufacture the outcome you want. The valley did not fill because men dug ditches. The valley filled because God said it would, and the digging was simply what obedience looked like while they waited on a word that had not yet come to pass.

You have been asking God for something. A door. A relationship. A responsibility. An assignment bigger than the one you currently carry. And you have been waiting for evidence before you move. Waiting for the sky to change before you pick up anything. But what if the instruction was never wait until you see it coming. What if the instruction was dig now, while the ground is still dry, because I have already told you what is coming and your obedience does not need to see it first.

The ground was still dry when they started digging. That is not a detail to rush past. That is the entire test. Anyone can prepare once the clouds appear. Anyone can act once the rain starts falling. The men in that valley moved dirt under a clear sky because the word of the Lord was enough. Not the wind. Not the rain. Not the visible proof. The word.

Maybe the sky over your life looks exactly the way it did a year ago. No wind. No clouds. Nothing that would tell an outside observer that anything is about to change. That is not a sign you misheard God. That may be exactly where He wants you.

Dig anyway. Make the call you have been putting off. Learn the thing you keep telling yourself you will learn once you actually need it. Clear what needs clearing so there is somewhere for the answer to land when it comes. Become capable of carrying what you keep asking Him to place in your hands. Not because the digging forces His hand. Because obedience was never meant to wait for visible proof before it moves.

The ditch was not the miracle. It was what faith looked like before one arrived.

Prayer

Lord, I have been asking You for things I have not made any room to receive. I have prayed for the door without preparing for what stands on the other side of it. Forgive me for waiting on the wind and the rain before I was willing to move. You have already spoken. I do not need to see the clouds gather to start digging. Give me the obedience to prepare in dry ground, to do the unglamorous work that only makes sense if You are telling the truth. I am not trying to force what only You can give. I am asking for the faith to get ready for it before I can see it coming. The ground is still dry. I am picking up the shovel anyway. Amen.
