“Everything happens for a reason.”
That sentence is not in Scripture. What Paul writes is that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. The promise is specific, it is addressed to believers, and the good in view is being conformed to the image of Christ.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. — Romans 8:28
This is the sentence people reach for at funerals and in hospital corridors, and it is offered kindly, but it carries almost nothing. A reason could be anything. Fate, chance, cosmic balance, or a lesson you were supposed to learn from a loss you never asked for. Paul's words are far more specific and far more comforting. We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. There is a worker, and it is God. There is a recipient, and it is those who love Him. And the very next verse defines the good, which is that we be conformed to the image of His Son. That reframes the whole promise. It does not claim your tragedy was secretly a blessing. It claims God is sovereign enough to weave even this into making you like Christ.
