Morning Came Anyway
Lamentations 3:22-23
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Yesterday may not have gone the way you wanted it to.
Maybe you said something you wish you could take back. Maybe you wasted time you meant to use better. Maybe fear got louder than your faith, you carried something God never asked you to carry, or you went to bed with the same unanswered question you woke up with.
And then morning came anyway.
The sun rose without asking whether you had earned another sunrise. Your lungs filled again. There was another day in front of you and, somehow, God had not run out of mercy overnight.
Lamentations 3 was not written from an easy place. Jeremiah was looking at devastation. Much of what surrounded him gave him every reason to despair. Yet right in the middle of that grief he remembered something stronger than what he could see: “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
New every morning.
Not recycled from yesterday. Not whatever mercy happened to be left over after you used too much. New.
There is something beautiful about the way God built that reminder into ordinary life. Night comes. The world becomes quiet. You sleep. And then light begins appearing again at the edge of the sky.
Another morning.
Another beginning.
Another chance to walk differently than you did yesterday.
You do not have to make yesterday disappear before you are allowed to receive today. If you need to apologize, apologize. If something needs to be corrected, correct it. If you sinned, confess it. Grace is not pretending yesterday did not happen.
But you do not have to live there.
Some of us carry yesterday far longer than God asked us to. We wake up and immediately reopen the case against ourselves. We replay the conversation. Revisit the mistake. Remember what we should have done differently. Before our feet even touch the floor, yesterday has already been invited into today.
But Scripture says His mercies are new every morning.
That means there is mercy for this morning.
Mercy to start again. Mercy to try again. Mercy to pray when yesterday you did not. Mercy to be patient today when yesterday you were not. Mercy to make the phone call, take the walk, open the Bible, do the work, forgive yourself for being human and move forward with God.
You are not promised that every morning will feel easy. Jeremiah certainly was not standing in comfortable circumstances when he wrote those words. The situation around him had not suddenly repaired itself.
What changed was what he remembered.
“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.”
Sometimes hope begins there.
Not with the situation changing. With remembering what is still true before the situation does.
God is still faithful.
His compassion has not failed.
His mercy has not been exhausted by everything that happened yesterday.
And you woke up inside another one of His mornings.
Most mornings will not feel like beginnings. The problem you went to sleep with may still be there when you wake up. The answer may still be no. The grief may still hurt. The consequences of yesterday may still require your attention. New mercy does not mean God gives you a new life every twenty-four hours. It means He gives you new grace to meet the life that is still in front of you.
That may be the quieter miracle of Lamentations 3. Jeremiah did not wake up to a restored Jerusalem. He woke up to a faithful God.
Sometimes morning does not change what happened. It changes what you have available to face it.
Yesterday’s strength may be gone. Yesterday’s patience may be spent. Yesterday’s courage may have failed you.
His compassion did not.
You do not need mercy for next Thursday yet.
You need today's.
And He has already given it.
So do not begin this morning by deciding the whole day based on how yesterday ended. Do not assume that because something has been hard for a long time it must always remain that way. Do not drag every failure, disappointment and unfinished thing into the new day as though God forgot to make anything new.
Morning came anyway.
The light came back.
You are still here.
And before you did a single thing to deserve it, mercy was already waiting.
Great is Thy faithfulness.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for another morning and for mercy that did not run out while I slept. You know everything I carried out of yesterday, the things I did well and the things I wish I could do differently. Help me learn from what needs to be learned without living inside what has already passed. Thank You that Your compassion is not exhausted by my weakness and that I do not have to earn a fresh beginning with You. Give me enough grace for today, enough strength for what is in front of me and enough faith to remember what is still true even when the situation has not changed. Yesterday is over. This morning is Yours. Help me walk into it with hope. Amen.
